Acupuncture is more than an ancient healing method. It's also used for diagnosis in equine veterinary care. Recent studies show that Acupuncture Point Sensitivity Scanning (APSS) can reveal subtle lameness. This approach provides insights that traditional methods might miss.

What Is Acupuncture Point Sensitivity Scanning (APSS)?
APSS involves checking specific acupuncture points to find areas with increased sensitivity. These points often indicate underlying issues, such as musculoskeletal pain or joint problems. It’s a quick, non-invasive way to reveal hidden issues in horses.
Acupuncture for Diagnosing Lameness
Lameness can hurt a horse's performance, but spotting it early is often hard. A study by Le Jeune et al. tested APSS on 102 performance horses.
Key Findings:
82.4% Sensitivity: APSS found lameness in over 80% of cases.
78.4% Specificity: The method accurately identified sound horses, minimizing false positives.
80.4% Accuracy: These results make APSS a reliable screening tool for lameness.
Importantly, over 50% of lame horses were not recognized as lame by their owners. This underscores the need for routine APSS evaluations for early detection.
Diagnosing Stifle Disease with Acupuncture
The stifle joint is one of the most complex in a horse’s body. This complexity makes diagnosing related conditions difficult. A study by Michelotto et al. found acupuncture to be effective for diagnosing stifle disease.
Key Results:
Imaging Confirmation: Radiographs and ultrasounds showed stifle-related problems in 21 of 22 horses. This included degenerative joint disease and ligament injuries.
Acupuncture can help with stifle disease. It finds pain in the sacroiliac joint and spine. This offers a complete picture of the horse’s health.
Why Use Evidence-Based Acupuncture for Horses?
A third study in the American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine backed the use of APSS.
Reproducibility: APSS produced consistent results across trained practitioners.
Clinical Relevance: Sensitivity at specific acupuncture points linked strongly to musculoskeletal issues.
These findings show that APSS is not just a complement. It’s a scientifically supported diagnostic tool.
