BEMER Therapy and the Science of Circulation in Equine Recovery

Updated: Dec 4, 2025

BEMER (Bio-Electro-Magnetic Energy Regulation) therapy is a special pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) treatment that enhances equine health and performance. It uses a lightweight, battery-powered blanket. This blanket sends low-frequency electromagnetic pulses across the horse's body. BEMER was first made for humans, but now it's adapted for horses. It boosts microcirculation naturally, without drugs or invasive methods. More riders and vets are using BEMER in their training and rehab. It may help speed up injury recovery, boost performance, and enhance overall well-being.

How BEMER Therapy Works for Horses

When a horse wears the BEMER blanket or leg cuffs, gentle pulses help blood vessels work better. This boosts local circulation. It sends more oxygen and nutrients to muscles and organs. Also, it helps remove waste faster. As a result, muscles get better fuel, inflammation reduces, and healing processes accelerate. BEMER sessions are brief, suitable before or after exercise, or as stand-alone treatments. The low PEMF intensity doesn’t create heat. This makes it safe for regular use, and no major side effects have been reported. BEMER is also FEI-compliant and classified as a non-restricted supportive therapy.

Improving Circulation and Microcirculation

Better circulation is key to many healing and performance improvements. Research shared with the American Association of Equine Practitioners shows that BEMER is unique. It uniquely boosts microvascular blood flow compared to other PEMF devices. In a study of 100 horses, those that had BEMER therapy during surgery had better blood flow. These horses received stronger anesthesia and showed lower blood lactate levels. This means they were better oxygenated. Improved microcirculation aids both medical procedures and regular recovery. Horses on a BEMER regimen often return to normal heart rates and lactate levels quickly after exercise. This shows they have a more relaxed physiology.

Aiding Injury Recovery and Rehabilitation

BEMER boosts blood flow. This helps injured tissues receive more oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells. It also reduces swelling and toxin build-up. Veterinarians and therapists find that horses with soft tissue injuries, like tendon strains, heal more quickly when BEMER is part of their treatment.

BEMER is especially beneficial for back and muscle pain. Many riding horses have sore backs. This can happen because of saddle fit, training intensity, or lameness. While traditional treatments help, BEMER adds a drug-free option for pain relief. A 2022 study showed that a BEMER blanket significantly reduced back pain in horses. Horses with chronic pain handled more pressure on their backs after treatment. They also showed improved spinal flexibility and range of motion. Dr. Melissa King, the lead researcher, called BEMER a “medication-free solution” for back pain. She strongly recommended it for sore horses.

Enhancing Performance and Post-Exercise Recovery

High-performance horses face intense training and competition, which can strain their bodies. BEMER therapy is popular with athletes. It boosts performance and speeds up recovery. This helps them train harder and bounce back faster. It improves a horse's suppleness during warm-up. Using the BEMER blanket before exercise boosts muscle microcirculation. This helps the horse feel more limber. Riders often notice their horses move more freely after a pre-ride BEMER session.

After intense exercise, BEMER is valuable for cool-down and recovery. Post-workout sessions boost blood and lymph flow. This helps remove lactic acid and waste. As a result, muscle soreness decreases and recovery time shortens. In a controlled study, horses that received BEMER therapy returned to normal blood levels faster after exercise. Those without therapy took longer to recover. They had lower heart rate variability. This suggests they shifted to a more relaxed recovery state.

BEMER also aids mental recovery and stress reduction, especially during competitions. Transport and unfamiliar environments can raise stress levels, impacting performance. BEMER activates the parasympathetic "rest and digest" response. This helps horses relax, often leading them to lick and chew during sessions. A calmer horse is easier to manage and performs better under pressure. At a German breeding station, daily BEMER treatments helped stallions. They improved semen quality and made the horses more focused. This also reduced stress for both the horses and the handlers.

Endorsements and Scientific Evidence

BEMER's use in horses is supported by growing scientific research and veterinary endorsements. Researchers at Colorado State University's Equine Sports Medicine program have published studies. They show that BEMER helps relieve pain and improve flexibility in horses. This program is a leader in horse rehabilitation. This research was shared at the 2022 American Association of Equine Practitioners conference. It informed veterinarians about a new therapy. BEMER therapy is gaining recognition in equine sports medicine. More vets and trainers worldwide support it. Scientific evidence backs its benefits.

A typical BEMER session starts by draping the blanket over the horse. Then, if needed, leg cuffs are attached. The horse can be in a stall or grooming area, and most stand quietly or even fall asleep during the 5–15 minute treatment. It's non-invasive, so horses generally tolerate it well, even those sensitive to touch. For busy trainers and riders, BEMER is easy to use. You can do it while grooming or tacking up. Newer models are programmable and shut off on their own, so they need little supervision. High-performance barns can now offer regular BEMER sessions for each horse. This convenience means less downtime.

If your horse is dealing with back pain, stiffness, slow recovery, or you simply want to support their performance and overall well-being, BEMER therapy can make a remarkable difference. We use the BEMER blanket in our practice because it helps horses feel looser, recover faster, and move more comfortably. Book an appointment with The Zen Vet to add BEMER therapy to your horse’s care plan and experience the difference improved circulation and gentle, science-backed support can make.
